A family of three fulfilled their dream of owning a home and purchased an older terraced house. With a rather compact layout, it quickly became clear that the unused attic should be transformed into a bright, welcoming space for playing, reading, and working.

The attic had previously served as a storage space. Two small, outdated roof windows let in some daylight, but their frames and seals had deteriorated noticeably due to weather exposure. Although heating pipes were present, there were neither radiators nor underfloor heating installed.
The floor was covered with a temporary wooden construction to hide the raw concrete underneath. The knee wall had been clumsily clad with thin insulation and panels. The walls consisted of bare masonry – functional, but far from cosy or inviting.

The family’s goal was clear: the attic should become a friendly, light-filled and inviting place – a room where everyone would enjoy spending time, whether working, playing or relaxing.

A key transformation was replacing the old roof windows with generous new rooflights, significantly larger in both length and width. The result: a bright, airy room with a fantastic view.

Along one side of the room, a custom-built cabinet was integrated into the knee wall by a joiner – carefully planned for functionality and discreet in appearance.

After an initial on-site meeting with selected contractors, offers were obtained, compared and the right professionals commissioned.
The homeowners also made a valuable contribution: they removed the old floor and wall cladding themselves and cleaned the space thoroughly before construction began. During the building conversion, they continued to support the project with hands-on contributions.

A second coordination meeting with all trades before construction ensured clarity in scheduling, smooth coordination at interfaces and the resolution of any open questions. After that, things moved quickly: the entire conversion was completed within a couple of weeks.

The result speaks for itself: a once dark, unused attic is now a light-filled, high-quality living space – full of atmosphere, far-reaching views, and countless possibilities for use.
A true gain for the family, and a prime example of what can be achieved through thoughtful planning, good collaboration, and both design and craftsmanship at a high level.
